A group of Danes on Sunday, visited Kafuta Skills Centre and donated a brand new generator to the centre at a ceremony held at the centre’s premises in the Kombo East District.

This donation followed a series of gifts that the centre has benefitted from over the years. Jan Bruhn Andersen, the main benefactor of this project was accompanied by his wife, Dorth Andersen, Susanne Skor Petersen, the project coordinator, other Danes and Ebrima Sanyang, their Gambian counterpart. Speaking at the occasion, Lamin Sanneh, the governor of Western Region pointed out health, education and agriculture as the government’s three priority areas of development. He also spoke at length on the significance of education.

He also took the opportunity to commend the donors for their immense contribution to the centre. He assured the gathering that they will not spare any efforts to mobilise the resources necessary for the functioning of the centre. For his part,  Gibril Kujabi, the voluntary administrator of the skills centre, who also doubles as the chairman of the Water and Health Committee, gave a brief history of the skill centre. According to him, the project started in 1996 through the initiative of a British philanthropist.

Initially, he said, they used their own resources to finance the activities of the centre, including the provision of transport fares for the tutor. "We could not overcome the constraints, leading to the closure of the skill centre. The salutary intervention of the Danish philanthropists helped to put an end to this situation," he explained. Other speakers included Ebrima Sanyang; Basiru Jarju,  the chief of Kombo North District; Famara Jallow Colley, the VDC chairman; Alhagie Kujabi, Kafuta ward councilor; Bruhn Andersen, the main sponsor; and  Susanne Skor Petersen, the project coordinator.

The donors were awarded certificates of appreciation and honorary citizenship of Kafuta. The governor was accompanied by Lamin Haja Bojang, vice chairman of the Brikama Area Council.
