2009 Kartong festival

The community of Kartong, over the weekend celebrated their annual festival at a colorful ceremony at the village in Western Region.

Peter Borshik, director of African Link, in collaboration with the Kartong community, annually organises the festival, which started five years ago.
During the opening ceremony of the four-day art, music and cultural festival, George Gomez, director of GNOC applauded the organisers for their good initiative of celebrating the Gambia art, music and culture, as well as promoting tourism in The Gambia.

He said Kartong is a historical village. “Kartong is now an eco-tourism town. There are lots of cultural and tourism activities taking place in this community which need to be documented and marketed not only to Africans, but to the world at large,” he said.

Peter Borshik, director of African Link, expressed appreciation of the turnout compared to the previous years. He said the festival has attracted many tourist and visitors to Kartong. He said it is a festival for The Gambia and urged Gambians to patronise and participate in the celebration.

According to him, Africa Link is an organisation that encourages people to come to Kartong festival to see the real culture and wonderful works of nature. He thanked the community of Kartong for making sure that the dream is realised. This year’s festival was celebrated with drumming, dancing and singing activities.
