5 CRR Villages fined on bush fires

The Niamina East District Tribunal Court recently fined five villages in the Central River Region, for refusing to participate in the fight against bush fires in their areas.
 
These villages are Sotokoi, Karantaba, Kununku, Njie kunda and Moria. Each village was fined to pay one thousand dalasis except Moria Village, who were fined to pay three hundred dalasis. According to the chief of the district, Alhagie Kebba Touray who presided over the case at Kerewan,  the villages refused to participate in putting off the bush fires which eventually burnt the entire forest. 

He called on his people to be mindful about bush fires, noting that it is among the major factors destroying the forest. He pointed out that the importance of the forest cover is the protection of soil against desertification, wind erosion and for the improvement of rainfall percolation, as well as rainfall distribution.

Seyfo Touray further said the forest also serve as income generating activities in order to alleviate poverty. He advised his people to protect the forest against bush fires and to participate whenever there is fire out break in the bush.
