As part of their desire to contribute towards sports development in The Gambia, the Sukuta Youth & Sports Association will commence the upgrading of Sukuta football field effective Sunday 13th January 2008. The project is estimated to cost about D800, 000.
The project includes the erection of a perimeter fence and planting of Bahama Grass. The first phase of the project would take-off with the Perimeter fence which is going to be shaped in a way to accommodate athletic competitions.
According to the Executive committee of SYSA, “the standardization of Sukuta Football Field will enhance good football/athletics and enable national sporting associations to consider using our pitch when the need arises. Being a densely populated town in Western Division and strategically located, the socio economic impact would register positive results.”
The total cost of the project is estimated at D800, 000 (eight hundred thousand dalasis).
The executive committee of Sukuta Youth & Sports Association, football teams and the entire community of Sukuta expressed gratitude to The Gambia National Olympics Committee under the Plymouth Challenge fund for being a major sponsor of this noble project. They were allocated an amount of D170, 540 (one hundred & seventy thousand, five hundred & forty Dalasis).
The committee further seized the opportunity to inform all football clubs/teams to participate in Sukuta football competitions and the general public at large to join them at the Sukuta football field on Sunday 13th January 2008 at 9.00 am and be part of this initiative.
They also appealed to organizations and individuals for any form of assistance towards the completion of the project. They can be reached on 9911408 or 7010878.
It will be recalled that the foundation stone of this project was laid on Friday 6th April 2007 by Mr Sheih Omar Faye, Former Secretary of State for Youth, Sports & Religious Affairs and according to the committee; the jobs were delayed in order to play the Sukuta 2007 Nawettan.
