President Yahya Jammeh will again demonstrate the immeasurable love and support he has for Gambian sports tonight, when he presides over a dinner that will witness the allocation of lands to the players of the National U-17 team that won the sixth edition of the CAF Under 17 Championship finals hosted in Banjul in 2005.
The benevolent Gambian leader will also pay all the unpaid match bonuses of the Under 20 players that participated in the 2007 Congo Under 20 Championship and Canada Under 20 World Champions later in the same year.
According to Mass Axi Gye, secretary of state for Youth and Sports, the President is honouring a promise he made to the Under-17 players shortly after they emerged triumphant in the Banjul finals.
“When The Gambia Under 17 team won the 2005 CAF Under 17 Championships in Banjul, the President promised to give them a land each,” SoS Gay told Observer Sports.
“And today, the President has given me the permission to allocate the plots of land to the players. And this will be done at a formal dinner today, at Kairaba Beach Hotel, to be presided over by His Excellency Dr Alhaji Yahya Jammeh.”
“The 22-man squad that won the trophy before proceeding to Peru will each be allocated a plot of land, while the players who participated in Congo and Canada championships will be given their unpaid match bonuses,” he said.
President Jammeh, who is the Chief Patron of all sporting associations in The Gambia, has again demonstrated his love for the development of Gambian sports, particularly football.
The same was true for the senior Scorpions in 2003, when all the players and their officials were allocated a plot of land for their heroic performance in the 2004 Nations Cup qualifier competition.
The Gambia National teams have always enjoyed President Jammeh’s support during every international competition, the latest being the US$5,000 given to each player of the National U-20 team, which paid him a courtesy call shortly before their trip to Canada for the Fifa World Youth Championship in June 2007.
