Seven in Bakau to be tried for Breach of Public Order

Monday, February 4, 2008

Seven residents of Bakau are expected to be arraigned before the law courts for trial under the Public Order Act. The seven are believed to have conducted themselves in a manner that could bring about a breach of the peace, contrary to section 9 of the Public Order Act.

The seven, namely Ebrima Jatta, Mariama Fatty, Jai Bojang, Fakebba Bojang, Menteng Bojang, Sireh Bojang and Jalika Bojang were seen around the premises of the Kanifing Court yesterday but their case file was not called. It is hoped their case will be heard today as this paper has been reliably informed to that effect.

Their arrest and subsequent charges resulted from a skirmish that erupted between members of the ruling APRC and supporters of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) following the announcement of the result in the Old Bakau Cape Point ward, declaring Ousman Jatta as the elected councilor.

Incidents occurred as elated and jubilant UDP supporters clashed with APRC supporters, hence the deployment of security forces at the scene.

The seven, believed to be sympathisers of the main opposition UDP in Bakau, are currently under police bail.
