Whats On: Stalwart a new force in Gambia’s dancehall scene

Thursday, March 5, 2009
Stalwart - the Poor People's Voice aka Mental Assassin is a young Gambian singer. Born Yankuba Dibba in Bakau in the late 80s the artist was inspired by the likes of Shabba Ranks, during his childhood.

In 1996, he started performance in the classroom as colleagues beat on the tables to produce background rhythms. However, it was around the late 90's that he decided to be more serious with his song writing.  "I've been performing at various places and even did dub plates for Dj's in The Gambia and abroad and recorded my first single called Justice. I came to set a trend for my people's upliftment, awareness, consciousness, liberation; unify the human race regardless of color or creed and defend right over wrong. I speak for the poor, make sure their voices are heard.

I stand against racism of all sort," he told his official site. Due to his electrifying and captivating performance, Stalwart won a singing competition in the year 2006 organized by a leading GSM operator in The Gambia. Stalwart is also seen as a trendsetter after introducing a new dance called ‘Drive the Car’,  which became a hit tune in the country.
