Her Excellency, Aja Dr. Isatou Njie Saidy, vice president and secretary of state for Women’s Affairs, last Friday, received Professor Franklyn Lisk, a visiting fellow from the Centre for Studies of Globalization and Regionalisation, University of Warwick, UK.
Speaking to journalists shortly after his audience with the vice president, at her office at State House, Banjul, Professor Lisk said his mission to State Souse was meant to discuss with the vice president and members of the disaster management council a wide range of issues including the issue of disaster management in the wider context, protection of the environment, enhancing national environment and also looking at the issues of human resource development.
Even though The Gambia has been faced with certain challenges, Professor Lisk said, it has been able to take advantage of the opportunities created by globalization to mobilize its natural resources which made way for its vibrant economy, and ensured the generation of employment and improvement of the living standard of the majority of Gambians.
"The Gambia is looking forward in terms of improving on what it has achieved on issues of climate change, ecosystem and human activities, health, education, shelter, nutrition, and also improving the living standard of Gambians," professor Lisk remarked.
The Warwick University professor revealed further that there will be a major conference on the subject of climate change in Copenhagen, Denmark, later this year. He said that it is a UN conference which seeks to renew the main international protocol that deals with climate change and environmental management. Professor Lisk further stated that The Gambia will be a major stakeholder in the outcome of the conference in Copenhagen, Scheduled for later this year.
He commended Gambia government for putting in place a national disaster management council to look after climate change and other environmental issues to ensure that the environment is protected.
