The University of The Gambia has now clocked 10. Its foundation was built amidst widespread scepticism both from within and outside. Some argued that our economy was too small for a university considering the income earning capacity of an average Gambian, while others upheld the idea to be mere political propaganda.
Today however, those who cast doubt on the survival of UTG have been proven wrong. They had distorted the simple truth that the human society grows complex every day and as such needs expertise (which has to be produced by a university) to manage its affairs. The fifth convocation of the university is due tomorrow. This shows that it is still on its feet but the tremendous contribution of UTG graduates in our socio-economic development is practically manifested in our every day realities of life for all to see.
The value of a period of further education lies in the fact that, for a number of years, a student has the opportunity, intellectually and socially as a scholar and member of a community, to explore the world in all its dimensions, especially the world of the mind. While pursuing knowledge in a chosen field, appreciating the standards of study and judgement within this one field especially, the student can also become aware of the criteria of excellence in other areas.
This is what a university education means and UTG has not in any way fallen short in that respect, giving the calibre of students it produces. The political environment of any given society is a key to the advancement of its educational system. The University of The Gambia is blessed to have had the backing of the government from day one of its inception. The students of the university will forever be grateful for the dynamic and visionary leadership of President Jammeh.
His realisation that the continued survival of any society depends on the education has no doubt paid dividend. We are optimistic that the Farababantang campus will soon be constructed as it is crucial for university education. We also hope that those who judge President Jammeh by the heights he has achieved shall remember the depths from which he ascended.
