I think for this year 2009, we are expecting to improve on our short comings. It was not easy for us last year. As you can see, President Jammeh is ready to support the development of sports in this country.
So we should all stand by him, to ensure that sports is greatly improved. We need to improve on all other games so that The Gambia can participate in the international games. The GFA has a very good relations with the National Sports Council and the Department of State for Youths and Sports and we need the support of all Gambians. On behalf of my executive and the GFA family, I say a big thank you to President Jammeh for his support to the GFA.

I am hopeful that Gambian football will improve immensely in 2009 and it will be a very successful year for Gambian sports. I believe that Gambian athletes under intensive training, will shine in the international scene.
I also believe and hope that, the Department of State for Youths and Sports will come up with credible, progressive and forward-looking blueprint for the development of sports which should embrace all the sporting disciplines as well as recreational sports.

In 2008, positive developments have been registered in the sports sector but there are areas that still need improvement. There are 25 disciplines in sports namely football, volleyball, athletics, basketball, among others and that the National Sports Council (NSC) since it became an Act of Parliament in 2000, were tasked with the responsibility of improving on those 25 sporting disciplines in a period of 8 years.
It is now exactly 8 years and they can’t improve on even 6 active disciplines out of the 25 disciplines. The NSC has a big task to improve upon. I would like to commend the Gambia Football Association (GFA) for their performance last year (2008). The GFA have registered 4 categories; namely: the U-17, U-20, U-23 and the senior national team, despite the lack of sponsorship.
Infact the GFA were doing some responsibilities of the Department of State for Youths and Sports and they also succeeded in making sure that the U-17 qualifies for the 2009 U-17 championship to be held in Algiers, Algeria in March. I call on Gambians to support the U-17. I would also like to commend the media houses especially sports journalists for their efforts in giving sports a wider coverage”, he concluded.

Working together for a better Gambia should be paramount. In the area of sports - football to be precise, the Gambia did wonders in 2008. And as we enter year 2009, I would challenge every Gambian to come together and ensure that we do even better.
As our gallant Under 17 team prepare for the 2009 CAF Under 17 Championship in Algeria next March, I would urge every Gambian to come together and help better equip the team for the Championship, which will in no small measure further expose the Gambia’s young talents to the wider world.
On a final note, I would commend the Gambian leader, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, for his untiring effort in the development of Gambian sports, which undoubtedly leads to several Gambian players turning professionals in recent years.
