Physical education teachers from the various private schools in the country have come together to form what is called Sports for National Private Schools (SNAPS).
Synonymous with the Gambia Secondary School Sports Association (GSSSA), the main objective of the new association is to stage sports activities that will bring together the member schools, which include Marina International Junior and High Schools, Cates International School, West African International School and SBEC International School.
Mr Alieu Jeng, physical education teacher at Marina International who also serves as the chairman of the association, said the schools that form the association were not members of the main school sports association for obvious reasons. He said there is a need for private schools to engage their students in regular, organised and supervised competitions, as is the case with the public schools.
For a start, Jeng noted, each member school will pay a contribution fee of D2,000 to kick start their activities. To make the association effective and efficient, he added, physical education teachers in the member schools will rely on their heads of schools for the necessary support and approval.
