Over-confidence cost us the cup

Banjul head coach Modou Bah has blamed ‘over-confidence’ for his team’s stunning defeat to bitter rivals Bakau in the Muhammed Yahya Jammeh Zonal Cup final on Saturday.

Bakau earned a back-to-back title - beating Banjul in both finals and coach Bah admitted “it is a big blow for the City Boys”. “It was sheer over-confidence that cost us the cup. The boys thought they had won the match well before the kicking the ball, which was not to be,” visibly shocked coach Bah told Observer Sports in a post-match interview.

He added: “The players failed to adhere to the instructions and we were made to pay for it. So I say sorry to all the Banjulians who made the journey to the match venue at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium”.

Despite missing out on the gold medal, however, coach Bah could not hide his delight in the manner the revamped competition was organised. “I am very impressed with the way the tournament was organised. And I will thanked the sponsor - President Jammeh and the organisers for a job well done and I hope that we will see more of this in the coming years,” he concluded.
