Bakau successfully defended the annual zonal football cup when they beat arch rivals Banjul 2-1 on Saturday at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium.
Bakau also became the first team to win the tournament after it was revamped and named after Baby Muhammed Yahya Jammeh with an improved winner prize of D50,000 (fifty thousand dalasis), a trophy and 25 gold medals. Amidst thousands of supporters including the Vice President Dr Aja Isatou Njie-Saidy and National Assembly speaker, Mrs Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay, the defending champions Bakau started Saturday’s final the brighter, and deservedly took the lead in the 10th minute, Sidou Bah blasting home from outside box.
Forward Bah applied the finishing touch to a square pass from Alagie Fatajo, after the midfielder had robbed possession from Banjul's veteran captain Muhammed Davies on the edge of the centre line. Bakau extended the tally in the 37th minute when Samsideen Badjie converted a penalty after the first goal scorer was brought down in the box by defender Samba Bah. The second-half saw an improved Banjul side, but skilful George Cole’s 70th minute goal, which emanated from a penalty, only proved to be a consolation.
Bakau did more than hold on for victory though, and substitute Buba Bojang could have had a third in the dying minutes after a fine run and one-two with Abdoulie Jatta - the eventual winner of the Best Player crown. As champions, Bakau received a giant trophy, cheque for D50,000 and twenty-five gold medals. The champions were also decorated with another trophy after the organisers voted them the Most Discipline Team of the tournament.
Bakau’s talismanic striker Abdoulie Jatta (Mista), also received a special trophy after he was named the most valuable player of the tournament by the sports journalists as. Banjul consoled themselves with D30,000 and twenty-five silver medals as runners up, while Serrekunda East bagged D20,000 as the third best side. A consolation prize of 10,000 went to the remaining five zones - Lamin, Sukuta, Gunjur, Serrekunda East and Brikama.
