At least N66m was raised in Asaba, Delta State during the official cup presentation ceremony and fund raising event for the WAFU Under 20 competition.
The event, which was organised to formally launch the tournament scheduled to hold across four venues between November 28 and December 9 in Delta State, also witnessed the official presentation of the trophy christened “Ibori Cup” by its organisers to the President of the sub-regional football union, Amos Adamu.
The cup was presented by the ex-governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, who was represented by Mr Champion Kpateghe, Commissioner, Special Duties, Government House. Adamu noted that the days of inactivity of the regional football body were over as he would use his headship to ensure football activities for the teeming youths in the region.
Adamu, added that the organisers approached Delta to host the football tournament because of Ibori’s acceptance to donate the WAFU-20 Cup, adding that the state would leave up to the challenge.
According to Nigeria’s former Sports Commission chief, who also serves as an executive member in both FIFA and CAF, the two-week long competition would benefit the Local Organising Committee of the FIFA U-17 World Cup to be hosted in Nigeria, noting that this was the bright chance for the U-17 LOC to test-run some of their programmes ahead of next year’s finals.
