Nianija by-election takes a new dimension

Tuesday, December 16, 2008
A news release received from the Independent Electoral Commission has revealed a new dimension of the by-election in the constituency of Nianija.

This occurred just few days after the nominated member of National Reconciliation Party (NRP) suddenly decided to withdraw his candidature and defect to the ruling Alliance for Patriotic and Reorientation Construction(APRC) party.

The release stated that, one Salla York, on   the   12th of December 2008  nominated  as NRP candidate for the said constituency for National Assembly by-election slated for 18th December has replaced Abdoulie Jallow. The release states that the development is in accordance with section 51 Subsection 4 of decree 75 of  1996 constitution.

It could be recalled that Abdoulie Jallow, hours after been nominated to run on the ticket of NRP, submitted to the IEC a letter of withdrawal which saw him defect to APRC. According to reports, Jallow cited reasons of principle, pointing out to the spree of development the country is undergoing. Apparently, he felt that the best thing to do was to give support rather than confronting a government like this.
