Muhammed Yahya Jammeh Cup: Gunjur look for second win

Wednesday, December 17, 2008
Actions will resume in the Muhammed Yahya Jammeh Perpetual Zonal competition today with Group A leaders Gunjur taking on bottom side Sukuta in an all Western Region affair at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium.

Gunjur will be assured of a place in the semi-final today if they garner the maximum points against the Sukuta side who are eyeing their first win after a goalless draw opener against Serrekunda West.

Gunjur sprang up to the top of Group A after beating the mighty Bakau side last weekend. The Western Region side netted in first through the ubiquitous midfield maestro Pa Modou Jatta who blasted in a solo after twenty minutes of play. Bakau fought back for an equaliser but only found one five minutes before the end of the game through Sulayman Banda.

As both teams were just knocking the ball around, as if satisfied with a stalemate, Bakau’s skipper Buba Bojang inadvertently headed in a cross from Gunjur’s Lamin Darboe to seal the three points for the Coastal Boys who will be looking for repeat score today  to berth a spot in the last four.

On Thursday, Lamin will lock horn with Brikama in their Group B clash at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium. Both sides would need the maximum points to remain in contention for the coveted title after a shaky start.

Brikama gave away a 1-0 lead to settle for 2-1 defeat against the Serrekunda East side who now sit on top of Group B with four points in two matches. Brikama's Mustapha Manneh put his side ahead just for two second-half goals from Serrekunda East’s Alagie Bambo Fofana and Ousman Jallow to deny the Kombo Central Boys the victory in a keenly contest game on Monday.

Lamin were, however, one point better of Brikama after forcing Banjul to a goalless draw.  It was City Boy’s second match that ended in a stalemate, having drawn goalless with Serrekunda East in the opener. See inside for the full statistics. Bezenty Gomez contributed to this story
