King Mohammed, others felicitate President Jammeh

Following the recent festive celebrations, messages of felicitation continue to pour into State House. The messages came from various global leaders in relation to the new year, 2009, and the Muslim new year (1430).

King Mohammed VI of Morocco conveyed his best wishes to His Excellency and family while hoping for progress and prosperity for the Gambian people.  King Mohammed spoke of the current delicate international situation and expressed hope that the aspirations of mankind will be fulfilled accompanied by a new, global cultural awareness enabling us to promote universal citizenship based on brotherhood, freedom, moderation and solidarity.  

He concluded by underscoring the role that has to be played by leaders, peoples, international organizations and civil society in order to build a new world order of peace and security.  In the context of the muslim  year, he underscored the important human values brought to mankind by Islam which were strengthened by the Prophet Mohammed and for this reason said we all need to examine our achievements and failures in the past year on the basis of what our religion has taught us.

Hoerst Kohler, president of the Republic of Germany, also sent a message of best wishes and good cheer to His Excellency. A greeting card was also addressed to His Excellency, the President and Lady Zineb Jammeh from HE Bashar & wife - Asma al-Assad - president and First Lady of the Syrian Arab Republic, extending their best wishes for a prosperous new year to their Excellencies.

In his congratulatory message,  HE Abdelaziz Bouteflika, president of the Peoples’ Democratic Republic of Algeria, extended his best wishes to His Excellency on the occasion of the new year (Hijrah 1430).  The celebration of the anniversary of this year, he indicated, shows the importance of the history of humanity.  According to him, it is an auspicious occasion which teaches us to build and strengthen developmental aspirations for our Islamic Ummah and which poses challenges that have to be faced in the spirit of solidarity.

Messages were also received from President Lee Myung-Bak of Korea, the Hon. Kevin Rudd MP, Prime Minister of Australia and from the executive secretary, OMVG. President Myung-Bak of the Republic of Korea conveyed to His Excellency best wishes for the new year and prayed for gifts of happiness, joy and peace for His Excellency in the days to come.

Prime Minister Kevid Rudd of Australia, Therese Rein and family, also extended season’s greetings and best wishes for 2009 to His Excellency.
Justino Vieira, executive secretary of the OMVG extended, on behalf of the Executive Secretariat and on his own behalf, best wishes for a happy and prosperous new year to His Excellency and family and to the people of The Gambia.  He prayed that 2009 witnesses the implementation of the ambitious project envisaged for The Gambia, the OMVG and Africa generally.
