First Lady visits Guinea Conakry

The First Lady of the Republic of The Gambia, Madam Zineb Yahya Jammeh, Thursday led a high powered delegation on a day’s state visit to Guinea, where she conveyed, on behalf of the Gambian leader, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, a message of condolence to the family of late President Lansana Conteh and the entire people of Guinea.

The First Lady and delegation were met on arrival at the Guinea International Airport by the First Lady of Conakry, Madam Camara and other government officials. Before departing for the Presidential villa, Madam Jammeh, during an interview at the airport, said the delegation was in the country to pay tribute to the former president, General Lansana Conteh, on behalf of President Jammeh, whom she said, was shocked and saddened by the news of the demise of the former president.

From the airport, the First Lady and delegation headed on to Mousaya, the home town of the late General Conteh, situated at the southern part of Conakry, in a district called Duverica At the home town of the former Guinean leader, Madam Jammeh was introduced to the late president’s widow, Madam Ajiatou Conteh, elder brothers, and sons.

Saikou Suma Conteh, a member of the family, acknowledged the visit by the Gambia’s First Lady and her delegation, and commended President Jammeh and the people of The Gambia for expressing their sympathy on the demise of his late brother. The visit, according to him, demonstrated the Gambia’s commitment to the bond that binds the two peoples together. Mr Conteh also described his late brother as a patriot who struggled to improve the lives of his people.

Saikou Suma Conteh used the opportunity to advise Guineans to always work hard to develop themselves, noting that without hard work, independence would be meaningless. Speaking on behalf of the Gambian delegation, the secretary of state for Basic and Secondary Education, Fatou Lamin Faye, described the death of General Conteh as a lost to not only his family and the people of Guinea Conakry, but to Africa at large. SoS Lamin Faye described the late president as an illustrious son who worked tirelessly for the advancement of the Guinean nation.

“His Excellency, the Late General Conteh, was somebody who made sure that he worked hard to keep the people of Guinea together and indeed Africa. That is a legacy he has left behind and all of us as Africans will continue from where he stopped. It is befitting for the First Lady of The Gambia to come here in Mousaya to extend condolences because The Gambia and Guinea are two countries that are deeply connected,” she said. The late general, SoS Lamin Faye went on, was instrumental in the struggle for Africa, and that as such his demise is a loss to many like Professor Jammeh, whom she said, is championing the call of African Unity.

The First Lady later filled in the condolence register to show their sympathy. Later, Madam Jammeh and the delegation visited the tomb of the late Guinean leader where they paid their last respect to him.
