Bakau United tame Biko in Bakau derby

Thursday, February 26, 2009
A late goal from substitute Amadou Baldeh of an uneven-matched game saw Bakau United beat their arch rivals Steve Biko last evening at the Independence Stadium in the week two matches of the GFA Division One League.

Despite being reduced to nine men in a game that was characterized with hard tackles, the Bakau United side kept their heads up and went ahead to earn their first win of the season after a draw match in the opener. Referee Papa Gassama ruled out as an offside what could have been the opener and Daddy Gai’s first goal of the season before Amadou Baldeh came off the bench to put his side ahead with only four minutes remaining.
Gai who had caused the Biko defenders problem all evening, was set up by Ebrima Touray in the penalty area. The skilful striker watched his effort parry by goalkeeper Buba Njie, but unmarked Baldeh was available to curl in a fabulous shot to seal the vital derby win for Bakau United whose failure to capitalize on their earlier chances ensured a level score in the first half.

Bakau United’s Abdoulie Sidibeh was on the end of a bizzare red card at the end of the first half after he was sent off for knocking Biko’s full-back Lamin Jammeh. Coming into the second half with a numerical advantage, Steve Biko fans were of the belief  that the game had been decided in their favour, even though this was not to be. Biko’s speedy striker Assan Jatta made couple of neat runnings in the opponent’s territory before Ousman Jarju squandered the side’s best chance in the 70th minute with a near-post shot.

In the 82nd minute, Ebrima Touray delivered a weighted cross that found Daddy Gai in the air, but the athletic striker’s flying header caused no trouble for goalkeeper Njie who was again called into action after his hasty hand-throw landed before a Bakau United player. With four minutes remaining however, Bakau United took a deserved lead, and despite conceding their second red card afterwards, the United side were able to hold on to their lead. Defender Abdou Ceesay was shown a red card in the stoppage time for time-wasting before a mild push-and-pull between the players and officials of the two sides brought down the curtain over the mouth-watering derby drama.

Results from day’s other matches. A flurry of goalless draws marred the day’s other matches, with the exception of Samger - Armed Forces tie at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium in which the former won 1-0. Armed Forces will go into the week three matches empty-handed having lost their first two matches - a misfiring start that would surely frustrate the sports-loving club president Major-General Langtombong Tamba.
At the Brikama mini-stadium, Gamtel and Hawks, both winners in their opening matches, could only settle for a goalless draw.

A similar scoreline could be reported of Real de Banjul and Africell-Sait Matty match played at the Manjai Kunda playground. The week two matches will continue today with champions Wallidan taking on Tallinding United at the Independence Stadium, while Brikama United face Sea View at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium.
