Bakau United sink Wallidan to go top

Sunday, March 1, 2009
Bakau United and one of Gambia’s best strikers Pa Amadou Gai scored two goals as his in-form Bakau side came from behind to beat champions Wallidan 3-1 and climbed to the summit of the Gambia First Division League table last evening.

Daddy Gai, as he is fondly known, scored a goal in each half to earn his United side their second win in three league matches. Wallidan first took the lead through star striker Sainey Touray (Ballack) in the early minute, but  Bakau United’s Ebrima Camara levelled the score in the 7th minute. Athletic and skilful striker Gai then put United in front midway through the first half before making it a brace in the second interval to seal the tie for Bakau United who now sit at the joint-top with seven points - the same points as Sea View and Samger, who both won their respective week three fixtures earlier on Saturday.

In the day’s other matches, both Steve Biko and Armed Forces earned their first win of the season after downing their respective opponents. Steve Biko bounced back from their mid-week 0-1 defeat by Bakau United to beat Brikama United 2-1 at the Brikama mini-stadium, while the Soldiers earned their first three points in three matches with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Hawks at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium.
