Gambia too strong for Sierra Leone

Goals by Saihou Gassama, Ebou Bojang and Alasanna Camara gave the Gambian Under-17s a resounding 3-0 victory in Freetown on Saturday and secured their place in the final round of the African qualifiers at the expense of Sierra Leone.

Gassama scored in the 26th minute of the first half with a powerfully placed free kick after Bojang had been fouled just outside the Sierra Leonean penalty area.

Bojang, who wants to become Gambia's all-time leading scorer, made it 2-0 in 58th minute with a superb solo effort and Camara completed the rout ten minutes from the end.

It gave the Gambia, African champions at this level in 2005, a 7-1 aggregate win after the 4-1 victory in Banjul a fortnight earlier.

It also set up another Gambia-versus-Ghana youth clash after the two countries veered into each other’s path in the African Under-20 qualifiers.

Ghana beat Libya 2-1 on Friday in Tripoli to complete a 5-1 aggregate win.
Ghana will host the Gambia in the first leg of the second round tie on the weekend of 7-9 November with the reverse fixture to follow in Banjul two weeks later.

The Gambia’s crushing victory in Freetown was watched by the Gambian High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Alhaji Dembo Badgie, who later hailed the players and expressed his pride at the progress Gambian football continues to make on the international stage. The team returns to Banjul on Monday. (culled from gambiasports.gm)
