Heavy Storm Wreaks Havoc In Niani

Tuesday, July 8, 2008
Reports gathered by this reporter have it that heavy rains accompanied by strong winds over the weekend destroyed several compounds in Niani district. Among the villages affected are Barajally Touba Kuta, Sukuta Niani, Kuntaur, Wassu, Jamagen, Jakaba, Touba Koto and Fulla Kunda.

The storm, which lasted over four hours, is also said to have destroyed an Arabic school and a Primary health post in the village of Kerr Sait Maram in the Central River Region.

Although no casualty has been reported, our sources indicate that the extent of the incident is such that the poor affected farmers would have to concentrate on rebuilding their houses, rather than go to the farms.

According to our provincial correspondent, some of the affected families are currently being sheltered at the villages’ cereal bank buildings while others are being accommodated by their neighbours.

The incident, which has been described by many as the most destructive so far, is also reported to have not only destroyed houses but also cereals and other food stuff, as well as valuable materials.

It could be recalled that heavy rains accompanied by strong winds recently destroyed several houses in the village of Wuli Barrow Kunda in Upper River Region.

Recent reports gathered by our reporter also revealed that a similar incident happened in the villages of Japineh, Karantaba, and Jarra Soma in the Lower River Region.
