Arson attack at Turo Darboe’s residence

Monday, January 21, 2008
Unidentified  arsonists,  in the early hours of Sunday, unsuccessfully attempted to burn the residence  of Momodou Turo Darboe, the APRC campaign manager for the Kanifing Municipality in the upcoming local government elections.  The arsonists, according to reports,  poured petrol on the electric meter placed on the veranda,  burning it down, resulting in a total blackout in the  compound .

According to Mr Darboe, the arsonist drove in  a taxi and parked  it at the gate of his compound. "As I drove into my compound at around   4am after a political meeting in Abuko, I saw  the  taxi  parked in front of my  compound .A guy with a blue jean ran out of my house and  headed  towards the next compound.

I thought it was one of my family members leaving in the next compound only to find out that the meter was burning.

I rush out to identify  who the guy  is but unfortunately  he boarded the said  taxi  and drove off. I was unable to  have   a  glimpse   of the taxi’s registration number" Darboe explained.

He expressed dismay over the act but was quick to say this will not distract him in the campaign.

The majority leader of the National Assembly and the NAM for Serrekunda East, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, the APRC mayoral candidate in KMC Yankuba Colley, together with some APRC supporters and sympathizers visited the scene yesterday.

Hon. Jatta said the incident acts as a reminder to a similar attack on in his Tallinding residence in the run-up to the  2001 presidential elections . He said despite of political differences, Darboe is a philanthropist who has helped many people irrespective of party affiliation.

"The attack has some political connotation and a planned one for that matter. Investigations are on-going and I hope that the police will find the culprits”.

Yankuba Colley also expressed dismay over the incident  saying "I am short of words because of the nature of the attack. If there was no quick intervention there could be some casualties. They are killers and should be brought to justice."

Police   visited the scene early yesterday morning  and reportedly found a  gallon  containing   fuel,  a  hacksaw,  candle and  spark lighter.
