Commissioner Jammeh Conta, the head of Mobile Traffic of The Gambia Police Force, has issued an ultimatum, asking drivers plying the route to Bakau to desist from using Sabina junction as a car park, effective today.
Commissioner Conta made this warning during a meeting with Bakau taxi drivers at the Bakau Car Park in Westfield. As of today, drivers using that road are supposed to continue to the Bakau Car Park, rather than having to stop halfway at Sabina junction, in most cases forcing commuters to pay double fares to reach their destination. This ultimatum, according to the Commissioner, is in response to concerns raised by commuters during a popular traffic talk show that comes on air every Sunday on the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS radio).
The police commissioner described the attitude of the drivers as "unfair," saying that the people are the assets of the nation. Commissioner Conta urged all drivers to comply with the new development. Defiance, he said, will be met with the full force of the law. He also reminded drivers that they have a very important role to play in the development of the nation, citing the fact that they are crucial in helping the police by giving them relevant information. The commissioner challenged drivers to listen to the Sunday traffic talk show and make their contributions.
“The doors are open for drivers to come forward and lodge their complaints,” he added. He went on to say that the police are working hand in hand with The Gambia Transport Control Association who are very cooperative and supportive in the execution of their (the Police’s) duties.
Commissioner Jammeh Conta urged the drivers to avoid giving their taxis to third party drivers locally called "Seru", most of whom don’t have complete documents. Sait Ceesay, a representative from The Gambia Transport Control Association, made similar remarks, urging drivers to respect the law. The meeting came to a conclusion with drivers promising to comply with the orders of the police commissioner. Commissioner Jammeh Conta was accompanied by Superintendent Fadie Jarju, officer commanding - Mobile Traffic, and Cadet ASP Samba Jawo of the Mobile Traffic Unit.
