Tears of joy as Soweto gran turns 126 years old

Maria Khumalo, Sowetos oldest citizen, savoured the day when she turned 126 years old at the weekend. She celebrated a joint birthday party on Saturday with her sister Christina Nkosi, 99, and cousin Martha Nkabinde, 80, in Zola. Khumalo was born on New Years Day in 1882, Nkosi on January 27 1909 and Nkabinde on May 1 1928. The birthday girls had no idea that the family was planning a mammoth party for them.
