The Gambia have been awarded the Fair Play trophy in the recently concluded Zone II football tournament played in Guinea Bissau, Observer Sports can reveal. The organising committee decorated The Gambia with the rare trophy after what they described as Scorpions humble participation that reflected their high sense of discipline and dignity.
The Scorpions travelled to Bissau with only home-based players hoping to win their first-ever Zone II trophy. They failed to impress in their debut group match as they lost 0-2 to Mali, marking Gambia’s first-ever defeat under the watchful eyes of Spanish Jose Martenez. The Scorpions could only fetch a point in their second match against Cape Verde. And the 3-0 win against Guinea in the final group match was not enough to earn them a semi-final spot.
Mali clinched the 2007 title after a 2-1 victory against Cape Verde in the final.
