Alhaji Babucarr S Sallah, head of commercial and marketing of the Gambian registered company, Slok Air International, has said that his company will resume normal operations next week.
In an interview with the Daily Observer, yesterday, Mr Sallah said their planes were undergoing maintenance in Ethiopia. According to Mr Sallah, they had a maintenance contract with the Ethiopian airline at their base in Adis Ababa and two of their aircrafts were on a total overhaul. One of them, he added, will be delivered in the first week of January for the resumption of their normal flight operations.
“ The air worthiness inspectors of The Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) will be leaving this weekend for Adis Ababa to inspect the aircrafts against its delivery date. One of the two will be delivered in the first week of January 2008, while the second one will do back-to-back services. Slok Air International have done services to humanity and we have gone to a stage of reaching our social obligations in countries that we are operating in. We own the air from West to Central Africa as we have the best aircrafts. To crown it all, we are safety oriented” , he stated.
Contacted for verification of the Slok Air version of the story, the director general of GCAA, Fansu Bojang, confirmed that currently, Slok Air are not flying as their aircrafts are due for maintenace.
According to DG Bojang, two of Slok’s aircrafts are currently at the Banjul Internarional Airport on mutual consent since they are due to undergo maintenance after covering the period stipulated by GCAA rules and regulations in terms of safety.
He then described Slok as a pivotal partner in the development of the aviation industry in The Gambia, being the airline that connects travellers from Banjul to various destinations across the subregion on a regular basis.
