WR forestry officer calls for massive tree planting as over 2000 tree seedlings distributed

Abdoulie A. Sanneh, regional forestry officer, Western Region has said that the rainy season is the best time for Gambian
people to massively plant trees in order to prevent the country from desertification.

The trees were distributed to Sifoe Senior School, Plants Stop Sahara, Methodist Mission Agricultural Program, Brufut Lower Basic School Social and Environmental Society of The Gambia College and Traditional Medicine and Home Care Foundation, at Brufut.

Mr Badjie made these statements last week, during the distribution of over two thousand different tree seedlings to four government institutions, NGOs and schools by the Western Region forestry Office.

According to him, trees are important in the development process of a country as they provide shelter, food and herbs for man. He stated that his office has distributed most of the trees to schools because students are the future leaders.

According to him, for children to achieve their future aspirations, the parents have to take good care of them by providing them with a friendly environment. "We believe that to teach a child on the importance of trees in our environment, is a way to provide them with brighter future" Sanneh noted.

According to him, planting tree can prevent The Gambia from experiencing deforestation. He further stated that Gambians should now have the mentality that if they cut down one tree from the forest, they should plant two of it” he said.

He then urged the beneficiaries to make the good use of the trees and urged them to plant them immediately.
