Gambian Businessman Sponsors New Mosque in Sukuta Banni

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

A Gambian businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Sanna Jaiteh, of Samikoto village, in Kantora, is financing the construction of a new mosque at Sukuta Banni ward, in Sukuta, Kombo North. The new modern edifice will replace the old mosque which was built with mud blocks by the community eight years ago. The cost of the project has not been specified but the new mosque will be twice the size of the old one.

Laying the foundation stone of the project on Friday, 14th September, 2007, the Imam of Sukuta, Alhaji Ismaila Beye, said that the building of mosques was a fulfillment of one of our obligations to Allah. He praised the community of Sukuta Banni for their initiative in starting the project and Mr. Sanna Jaiteh for putting his resources in such a worthy cause.

The Imam of Sukuta Banni, Alhaji Yaya Saidy, Deputy Imam Sulayman Sabally and other members of the local mosque committee, narrated how the community had been trying to raise funds on their own to rebuild the mosque when Mr. Jaiteh came forward and offered to sponsor the project. They said the offer, which came as a complete surprise, was a source of immense joy for the entire community and they thanked Mr. Jaiteh for what they described as “a great deed in the service of Allah.”

A member of Sukuta Banni Mosque Committee told our reporter that once the mosque is completed, the Committee would be appealing to other Muslims in the country to help bring water and electricity supplies to the mosque.
