Struggling Banjul meet fancy Gunjur in semis

Tuesday, December 23, 2008
The semi finalists in the on-going Muhammed Yahya Jammeh Perpetual Zonal Championships were confirmed on Sunday, with giants Banjul struggling to go through to the semi final where they would meet the in-form Gunjur side.

Banjul drew 1-1 with Brikama in their final Group B clash on Sunday, to emerge as Group B runners up. The City Boys will face the Western Region Boys in the semi-final on Saturday, December 27, at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium, as they still look for their first win having drawn all their three group matches.

In contrast, Gunjur surprised the pundits after pulling seven valuable points to finish ahead of Bakau, Serrekunda West and Sukuta in Group A. The other semi-final match will pit Serrekunda East against the defending champions Bakau on Sunday, December 28, at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium.

Serrekunda East came from behind to beat Lamin 2-1 to finish on top of Group B with seven points, while Bakau needed forward Abdoulie Jatta’s last minute winner to finish as Group A second best with four points.

Meanwhile, a selection from the four semi finalists will engage the Gambia Scorpions in a friendly encounter meant to raise fund for the financially-stretched Gambia Football Association.

Scheduled for Wednesday, December 24, at the Independence Stadium Bakau, the friendly tie will feature the Gambia professional players most of whom are presently in the country for a season break.

The Scorpions are billed to have similar friendly match against their juniors, the Gambia Under 17 team, at the Brikama Mini-stadium on Friday.
