Unscrupulous Fans Attack Goalkeeper Joe Gomez’s Family

An unusual scene in the history of Gambian Football happened last week as some unscrupulous fans attacked the Family of the Gambia National U-20 team goalkeeper Joseph Gomez alias Nding.

The ugly scene occurred on Monday 2nd and Sunday 8th July, 2007 after the Gambia debut game against Mexico and final encounter against Portugal respectively.

Speaking to Pointsport in their residence in Dippa Kunda, yesterday, Joseph Gomez’s Mother Mariama Jarjue said that this was the second time that Fans attacked their home, the first scene occurred just after the Gambia lost to Mexico 3-0 on Monday July 2nd , 2007.

“The fans came to our residence and were using all kind of abusive language toward us and threaten to kill us,” she said.
The worried old Woman revealed that the fans accused his son Joseph Gomez for allowing cheep goals against Mexico and Portugal.

Mrs. Jarjue added that even if she left for the market, people use to point fingers at her and some of them would go as far as insulting her.
Also explaining their ordeal to Pointsport, the elder sister of Joseph Gomez, Marian Gomez said she did not understand what this have to do with their family.

“My old Mum does not know any thing about Football and if the Gambia win am always happy because it is victory for all Gambians,” she pointed out.

Asked if Joseph Gomez is aware of the sad news, Marian Gomez replied in the negative.
“We don’t want him to lose concentration in the games ahead,” she added.
Marian thanked some friends and ex- team mates of Joseph Gomez for preventing those unscrupulous fans from entering their home.

She appealed to the security forces to help them as their life is in danger.
In a related development, some fans also attacked the residence of Coach Bonu Johnson in Sanchaba Suley Jobe after the Gambia’s 3-0 defeat against Mexico.

The attack has forced Bonu’s wife to abandon the house.
Some security forces were seen around Bonu Johnson residence on the day of the Gambia’s third outing against Portugal on Sunday, providing security for the family.
