Gunjur shock Bakau to climb top of Group B

The defending champions of the Muhammed Yahya Jammeh Cup, formerly Zonal Championship, suffered their first defeat at the hands of Gunjur in their Group B clash played at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium.

Bakau, who drew 1-1 with Serrekunda West in the opener, now face an uphill task to defend the coveted trophy after a 1-2 defeat against the underdogs, Gunjur, on Saturday. Pa Modou Jatta fired Gunjur ahead in the 29th minutes before Bakau replied in the 85th minutes.

Bakau’s hopes of securing a point in the fiercely contested tie was dashed a few minutes later when defender Buba Manneh headed the ball into his own net to extend Gunjur’s tally.

Serrekunda West and Sukuta drew goalless in the group’s other match at the Serrekunda East community stadium on the same day much to the delight of Gunjur who now sit at the summit of the group on three points with two group matches to go.
