Wallidan and Samger share spoils

Front-runners, Wallidan and Samger, fought a tooth-and-nail goalless draw last night at a crowded Serrekunda West Community Stadium, as the race for the GFA division one league crown gets more complicated and fascinating.

The stalemate result, which was rather a good news to ears of Hawks faithfuls, means both Wallidan and Samger are still level on points (36 points a piece) at the top, with the former having a two-goal leverage over the latter.

Close contenders, Hawks, can join them at the top to renew a three-horse race if they can beat Steve Biko today at the Independence Stadium.

Yesterday’s result, which was a repeat of their first-round score line, left both coaches optimistic of clinching the title.

Wallidan coach, Foday Bah, told Observer Sports shortly after the final whistle that winning the title in still on the card, though they will meet a much matured team in Hawks in the final match.

“It was a good game and I am going to congratulate Samger for good their display,” he said.

“We are meeting Hawks in our final match and we are going to prepare for them and I am optimistic that we are going to beat them and claim the title.”

His counterpart, Jane Joof, is also confident that Samger  will lift the crown in the face of the big guns.

“Statistically, we are very much in the frame compared to our fellow contenders.

Wallidan will next play against Hawks who are also in the title race, and we are facing a side (Steve Biko) who are not. So I think we have it in our own hands,” he said.
