D2.5M sports complex unveiled

Father Gough, a prominent figure in Gambian sports on Sunday presided over the opening of a multi-sports complex constructed at Manjai Kunda at a tune of of D2.5 million.

Unveiled as Father Gough Sports Foundation, the centre houses several facilities including a standard football pitch, a well furnished dressing rooms, medical rooms, coaches’ room and toilets.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony that was attended by scores of sports dignitaries and a cross section of Manjai Kunda community, the secretary of state for Youth and Sports, Sheriff Gomez thanked Father Gough for undertaking such a noble gesture. He said that his department alone cannot develop sports hence the need for stakeholders’ involvement.

SoS Gomez assured his department’s ever readiness to work hand in glove with Father Gough Foundation for the development of Gambian sports. The honourary president of the Gambia Football Association, Alhaji O.B Conateh, described Father Gough as a role model who continues to contribute to the development of sports in the country.

He therefore thanked the Banjul Mayor, Samba Faal, for the honorary citizenship he conferred on Father Gough, as recognition for his good work. Other speakers at the ceremony included Bai Malleh Wadda, the coordinator of the foundation, Modou Salieu Gomez, the alkalo of Manjai Kunda and Salieu Manneh, the ward councillor of Manjai Kunda.
