The national Science and Technology Week celebration was observed from Monday, November 26 to Friday, November 30, 2007, in all Upper Basic and Senior Secondary Schools in The Gambia.
The week is aimed at raising students awareness odthe importance of science and technology in the socio-economic development of any nation. One school whose week-long celebrations did not go unnoticed was Latrikunda Upper Basic School, which is headed by Mrs Mary Allen.
The school observed the week in the form of quiz competitions, debates and cleansing exercises.According to Mrs Jobe, head of the science department at Latrikunda Upper Basic School, they started the special week by orientating the pupils at an assembly about the importance of science and technology.
On the day two, she added, more emphasis was placed on environmental sanitation which was followed by a mouth-watering inter-house quiz competition.
Six houses; namely Allen, Badjie, Nkrumah, Cabral, Molloh and Touray, took part in the quiz competition. Eventually, Allen and Molloh houses came out as the best two after the fiercely contested competition, and they were selected to face each other in the debate, the topic of which was ‘Ushering in science and technology has done more harm than good’.
The final day (Friday) was marked with a general cleansing exercise in which the general students were joined by their teachers to clean the school grounds and its surrounding.
