It was a raise to dust attack on Sunday morning at the small village called Babylon in Kombo North. But one man baptized the sad event as a battle between David and Goliath in the Holy Bible. According to the eyewitnesses, some villagers of Makumbaya, Lamin, Mandinaring and Kerewan in Kombo North joined force together to launch a brutal attack on the small village of Babylon over land dispute.
This attack started between the hours of 0800 and 0900 o’clock on Sunday, March 30, when the four villages young and old turned themselves to militias and started to destroy, challenge and beat whoever that come their ways. On their entry into the small but popular Babylon village, everything at sight becomes their enemy. They stirred the village beyond expectation with different types of jujus, weapons, and clubs among.
On this unexpected event, Inspector Sulayman Secka, police PRO said when these intruders enter into the village of Babylon they destroyed and headed towards the Alkalo of the village’s compound, Lamin Jarju, his houses, generators and many other things were destroyed. According to the record 8 uncompleted buildings, 3 cars numbered KM 7622 A - BMW, BJL 6666 C - BMW and BJL 1055 E - Toyota were burnt into ashes, 10 completed houses were completely burnt down, 2 wells were destroyed and poisoned, 2 toilets and 4 bathrooms were damaged. Also 23 compounds were destroyed and 2 generator sets were burnt into ashes as well. Four people who tried to appease them were seriously wounded.
Inspector Secka added that eighty-five (85) men were arrested. Among them is Kerewan Alkalo, his house was the meeting joint for the attackers previous the day of the attack, while 136 jujus, 35 cutlasses, 12 diggers, 3 hammers, 13 knives, 2 pick axe, 2 arrow bars, 12 axes, 18 life rounds (cartridge) for S.B. gun were collected from them. While he noted that the case has been formerly charged to the Brikama Magistrates’ Court sometimes ago.
However, on Monday, 31st of March, at least 88 men from Lamin, Makumbaya, Kerewan and Mandinaring villages were arraigned before Magistrate Edrisa Mba’ of the Magistrates’ Court and charged for arson, going armed in public and conspiracy to commit felony in the village of Babylon, Kombo North. In reference to the statement and the particulars of the offence on count one, the 88 accused persons on March 30, went to Babylon village in Kombo North and willfully and unlawfully set fire on some houses.
Count two stated that the 88 accused people on the same day were unlawfully seen misbehaving in the said village fully armed with cutlasses, daggers, and hammers, among other weapons. The count three read that the accused persons on the same time, conspired together to commit felony.
In their responses to this accusation they pleaded not guilty to the three count charges preferred against them. See detail of this court proceed in the Daily Observer of Thursday, April 1, 2008, while the case will continue on April 7, 2008.
