Teacher arrested for baby dumping

Mariama Sillah, a 26-year old Primary Teacher Certificate (PTC) teacher trainee attached to the Bijilo Lower Basic School, was on Friday arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Old Yundum Police Station.

She was arrested for allegedly dumping her baby in a pit latrine in a compound situated at the outskirts of Old Yundum in the Kombo North District. The suspect is a native of Samba Kala village in the Lower Nyorimi District.

According to ASP Fakebba Darboe, the officer commanding at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Western Region, the suspect was arrested after the police received a tip. He added that while under interrogation, she confessed to the crime. He said she also disclosed that she gave birth to the baby on the 8th of October.

ASP Darboe further said that it was after ten days that the matter came to their attention. The Fire and Ambulance Service was alerted, and they retrieved the decomposed remains of the baby from the pit latrine. 

Mariama Sillah, an unmarried woman, confirmed to the press that she had birth to and dumped the baby in a pit latrine.  She also said she has two other children who are currently with her mother in Senegal.
