Stakeholders meet to assist Ebo Town flood victims

A one-day workshop organised by stakeholders on the preparation of a response plan for the flood victims of Ebo Town was last Thursday convened at the KMC Chambers.

The workshop was meant to remedy the effects of the serious floods that occurred in Ebo Town.

It could be recalled that due to the recent rains, the situation in Ebo Town has been aggravated to a state of emergency as the flooding in the area was exacerbated by its topography and the lack of adherence to building regulations.

According to Yankuba Colley, the mayor of KMC, the recent heavy rains experienced in the municipality have resulted to massive flooding, most noticeably in the Ebo Town area. He said 90% of the compounds in Ebo Town Badala and Central sub-wards are severely affected by the heavy rains in one way or the other.

In 2007, the same areas were flooded with reported cases of cholera prompting the need for urgent intervention of people in the health sector and other stakeholders.  As the need to response was urgent, the committee decided to conduct a rapid assessment to capture key issues relating to the disaster.  

Statistics indicate that of 18, 363 households in Ebo Town, 294 were affected.  The statistics also indicate that 45% of the affected persons are children.
