Sasco Company, a business enterprise located on Kairaba Avenue, was, on Friday, convicted and sentenced for illegal dumping, contrary to Part I and Part II of the Anti-Littering Regulation 2007, and Section 1 of the regulation.

The company appeared before Magistrate Mustapha Camara of the Kanifing Municipal Court, who delivered a judgement involving six-month imprisonment or a fine of D1,000.

According to the particulars of the offence, which was read in a crowded courtroom by Buba Sillah, a cleansing service inspector at KMC and coordinator of Operation Clean the Municipality, on or before 26th June, 2008, along or at the Cape Point highway in the KSMD, Sasco Company wilfully and indiscriminately used a truck (BJL 5972 C) on the said highway to dump waste, causing harm to both the people and the environment.

When the charge sheet was read to Mr Nabi Diab, who represented Sasco, he accepted guilt, before the magistrate delivered his judgment. Mr Diab then paid the fine to avoid imprisonment.

It could be recalled that President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, who is the chairman of the National Environment Management Council, signed the Anti-Littering Regulation into law on 14th June, 2007.
