Patrick Chang, Taiwanese ambassador to The Gambia, Mr Luke Chang, president of Motech Industry Inc in the Republic of China on Taiwan and Mr Tsai, general manager of the Taiwanese Energy Company, on Tuesday, visited the National Water and Electricity Company Ltd (NAWEC) headquarters along Mamadi Manjang Highway in Kanifing.
The visit was meant to foster a relationship between Motech Industry and NAWEC with the aim of incorporating the use of solar energy in the drive to electrify the whole country.
In his welcoming remarks, Momodou Jallow, acting managing director of NAWEC, outlined his company’s readiness to work with Motech industry, adding that they will be interested to incorporate the use of solar energy in the drive to electrify The Gambia. According to him, solar energy is the most ideal form of electricity in the rural area, where conventional form of energy is not commercially viable. “It’s expensive to run transmission lines to small villages and hamlets,” he added.
“The availability of electricity is an important aspect of a country’s well-being, and President Yahya Jammeh’s desire to make The Gambia a city state begins with the electrification process,” he noted.
Mr Jallow further highlighted that the increasing cost of fuel is a great hindrance to NAWEC’s financial commitments and that the alternative source of energy cannot be over emphasized.
For his part, Patrick Chang, Taiwanese Ambassador to The Gambia commended president Jammeh for being a visionary leader who’s intention is to change the livelihood of Gambians.
“President Dr Alhaji Yahya Jammeh once told me that he wants to electrify the whole country. I wondered how he can do that, but as he started implementing his plans first with the rural electrification project from Barra, Farafenni and Basse, this has motivated me to complement his efforts. This is a clear testimony of President Jammeh’s love and care for Gambians,” Dr Chang revealed.
Ambassador Chang added that when President Jammeh last visited Taipei, he met Luke Chung, President of Motech Industry Inc, adding that Jammeh was impressed with products of the industry and he invited Mr Chung to visit The Gambia. He said that the visit is a feasibility study, and that the team will be back for the implementation of the solar power project. Mr Luke Chang, president of Motech Industry Inc lauded The Gambia for having beautiful sunshine, that can be used to produce electricity by solar power.
He added that the oil price has now reached 100-103 dollars, a barrel, and for producing electricity, solar energy is cheaper than what is produced by oil. He noted that it is a great opportunity to develop solar energy in The Gambia, adding that he is more than willing to give his best in the technical support to NAWEC in implementing the solar energy project.
Other speakers at the occasion were Abdoulie Sillah, board member, NAWEC, and Sira Wally Ndow Njie, human resource director.
