20 litres of fuel lands man in jail

One Modou Sanyang of Brufut village was yesterday convicted and sentenced to a one-month imprisonment term with hard labour by Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates Court.

Modou was taken to court for stealing 20 litres of fuel on the night of July 8th 2007, from his uncle’s compound.
When the charge was read over to him, he pleaded guilty. However, before the presiding magistrate handed down his judgement, Mr. Sanyang in his mitigation plea told the court to temper justice with mercy. “I did this to help myself and to have fish money after selling the fuel”, he said.

According to the facts put before the court, the accused Mr. Sanyang was arrested by the patrol team of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) at Tipper Garage with the said fuel on the 8th July, 2007.

Upon hearing the facts and the accused’s own plea, Magistrate Jammeh consequently convicted and sentenced Modou Sanyang to one month imprisonment with hard labour.  He ordered the uncle to collect the fuel within two weeks or forfeit it to the state.
