German surgeons due in May

At least three German Surgeons, Dr Lei Li, Dr Siegert and Dr Knoop, from Germany are expected to arrive in The Gambia in the first week of May, to perform the cleft palate and burns surgery for patients at the ASB Clinic in Dippa Kunda, Daily Observer can reveal.

In an interview with the Daily Observer, Beatrice Weigelt, ASB Project Co-ordinator, said this will be the second time for the plastic surgery to be conducted in The Gambia, initiated by the ASB Clinic. She added that, the German Surgeons are expected to start operation on May 5th, 2008 and will return back to Germany after one week.

According to Madam Weigelt, about 42 children have been registered, and that all the operations will be done at the ASB Clinic in Dippa Kunda. She said the surgery operations will be done free of charge, adding that, it costs a lot of money to ASB Clinic, hence they are responsible for all the logistics and expenditures.

Mrs Weigelt then called on the general public to support this initiative by donating. She revealed that the ASB Clinic, since its establishment in The Gambia in 2007, treated about 36,000 outpatients annually.
