Baba Hatu Gassama's sponsored Bwiam nawettan football tournament came to its climax over the weekend when the travelling players of Bruck Village were stung by Sonko's Alagie Sonko's mesmeric 13th minute set piece.
The game which was graced by hundreds of fans and sports enthusiasts from the neighbouring villages of Kanilai, Bruck, Kanfenda, Dobong, Kankuntu, Krundulai and Boston was not lacking in skills, tactics and technique. The travelling team of Bruck set aside all odds emanating from going to work on their farms and having to trek kilometres to the venue of the final in Bwiam by putting up an impressive performance. They created numerous chances through star player Habibou Colley but could not hit the back of Sonko's net.
Sonko's goalie Musa Saidy rose to the occasion any time his goal mouth was threatened by Bruck strikers. The home team made no mistake in firing in the only goal of the game through their ubiquitous play maker, Alagie Sonko whose set piece kept Bruck goalkeeper glued on his spot.
Both teams made it to the final by narrowly edging out their formidable opponents in keenly contested encounters. Sonko's thrashed Mission Brothers 5-3 in the semi final to book their ticket to the final after a one all draw in regulation time, while Bruck had to wait for 85 minutes to get the much needed three points against Kankuntu.
As champions, Sonko's went home with a trophy and cash prize of D2,000, while Bruck had to console themselves with D1,700. Lions FC of Juda was crowned the most discipline team.
