Corporal Foday Saidykhan testifies in fake currency case

Detective Corporal Foday Saidykhan, attached to the Criminal Investigation Department at the Serrekunda Police Station, recently testified in an ongoing fake currency case involving one Abdou Joof before Senior Magistrate Kumbah Sillah-Camara of the Bundung Magistrates Court.

The detective who is PW1 in the case, told the honourable court that on 17 December, 2007, while he was on duty at the Serekunda Criminal Investigation Department office, the accused person, Abdou Joof, was brought in for his alleged involvement in a fake currency deal.

“I was  instructed to take cautionary statements from the accused. I recorded his statement in the presence of an independent witness called Bakare Darboe,” he told the court.

During cross-examination, the defence counsel, Ousainou Darboe, asked Corporal Saidykhan from where and who brought Abdou Joof to the Serekunda Police Station. In reply, Mr  Saidykhan said the accused was brought in from Yundum Police Station with a report that he was intercepted at the checkpoint. He said he did not know or interview the officer who brought him in.

Referring to the cautionary statement obtained from the accused, which was tendered in court as an exhibit, the  defence counsel asked if the detective found out about the D1000 worth of fake notes with him. Detective Saidykhan replied that the accused told him that the police who intercepted him said the notes were fake. The case was adjourned until today for continuation. ASP Bojang represented the IGP.
