The Brikama Major Health Center’s (BMHC) Emergency Maternal New born and Child Health (EMCH) pilot project evaluation report was last Tuesday validated at a one-day workshop at the Western Region governor’s office in Brikama.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Ramou Cole-Ceesay, head of the National Reproductive and Child Health Program Unit at the Department of State for Health, stated that the project came into effect in 2006 and is supposed to end this year. According to her, the project is supported by the World Health Organisation and two UK-based organisations. She further stated that the project has three intervention areas: Infrastructural improvement and security; capacity building of personnel; and institutional strengthening of the referral system.

She then reaffirmed her department’s readiness to work towards the reduction of the maternal and infant mortality rate, as enshrined in the Millennium Development Goals, number 1 and 2. She commended the management of the Brikama Area Council for the improvement in security at the Brikama Major Health Centre.

For his part, Lamin Sanneh, the governor of Western Region said “health is a priority area for the government”, calling for the immediate implementation of the said policy for the attainment of the  MDGs.
