The Gambia Teachers’ Union (GTU) recently convened a two-day workshop to review their mid-term activities as well as to strategize a way-forward in enhancing the welfare of teachers.
The two-day workshop was held at the Gambia College auditorium in Brikama from 6-7 July 2007.
In his remarks at the opening ceremony, President of the Gambia Teachers’ Union, Mr. Omar Ndure, commended teachers for their positive attitude towards the union, urging them to redouble their efforts in strengthening their capacity so as to be able to meet the targets of the 2004-2015 Education Policy.
He pointed out that education is the cornerstone for meaningful and sustainable development of any country.
For his part, Permanent Secretary, Department of State for Education, Alhaji Babucarr Boye, emphasised the need for all hands to be on deck for the promotion of quality and relevant education delivery in the country.
Teachers, he went on, are overwhelmingly important to the education sector and, therefore, need to redouble their efforts in ensuring that quality education and education for all objectives are attained.
The Education Perm. Sec. thanked teachers for their ‘hard work, commitment and dedication’ to duty.
Also speaking at the opening ceremony, Secretary of State for Trade, Industry and Employment, Abdou Colley, said one of the objectives of the two-day forum was to consolidate the gains so far made by the teachers. He commended teachers for what he called their tireless efforts in contributing to ensure that education is accessible to every Gambian child.
He enjoined the GTU to keep up the momentum.
