Comium, one of the three GSM operators in the country, last Friday, donated school bags and pens,  to the Jammeh Foundation for Peace (JFP), the charitable organization initiated by President Yahya Jammeh.

The items were received by  Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, the vice president and secretary of state for Women’s Affairs, who is also the board chairperson of the Foundation, on behalf of the foundation at her office in Banjul.

According to officials at Comium, the gesture is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility, aimed at complementing the Foundation’s efforts in providing education to the average Gambian.

Speaking to a group of waiting reporters shortly after the presentation, Amer Atwi, the managing director of Comium, said he believed that their contribution would go a long way in meeting some demands of students in the country. He described education as an important sector that deserves support.

Answering a question on why his company chooses JFP for the donation, Mr Atwi pointed to the fact that since the inception of the Foundation, the authorities at the Foundation had been championing the course of education in the country. "The donation was just a starting point of a fruitful partnership as we intend to further collaborate with the Foundation to support more social activities in The Gambia," he said.

According to Mr Atwi, Her Excellency, the vice president, commended his company for the move as education is among the sectors that needed support.

"She welcomed the initiative and further suggested many other ways that Comium could come to the support of the Foundation’s projects" Atwi concluded.
