Gambia Takes On Mali Tomorrow in Zone II Tournament

Sunday, December 2, 2007

The Scorpions of the Gambia under the guidance of Spanish Coach Jose Martinez will take on Mali tomorrow in their first group match of the eight-nation biennial championship in Guinea-Bissau.

Mali is not a stranger to The Gambia as it could be recalled that in 1997 when the Gambia hosted the Amilcar Cabral Zone II in Banjul, the Scorpions were eliminated by Mali 2-1 in the semi-finals.

Football pundits are very optimistic that Gambia, which are yet to win this championship despite many years of participation, are the favourites for this year.

The Gambia Football Association Prexy, Seedy MB Kinteh, for his part expressed satisfaction with the overall state of preparedness of the team, and his optimism for a first-time Gambian triumph.

The Scorpions will meet Cape Verde on December 3 in their second group match, and will face the defending champions, Guinea Conakry on Wednesday, December 5, for the final group match.
Group A includes host Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone.

The championship, which kicks off today, is scheduled to end December 10.
