Gambia Break North African Jinx

Thursday, September 13, 2007

The Gambia’s victory over the Dessert Warriors of Algeria last Sunday at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, marked the end of decades of North African domination on Gambia Football.

In the past all Gambia- North African bouts at the senior level always went in favour of the North Africans.

It was only at the junior or Cadet levels that The Gambia always upset the North Africans.

The last time the Gambia Senior Squad hosted a North African team was in 2001 when The Gambia was drew against Morocco in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers.

The first leg played in Banjul; The Gambia was held to a 2-2 and the Scorpions lost 2-0 in Rabat.

It has been the same story since the early days of Gambian Football.

But with Sunday victory over Algeria the long tied marriage between The Gambia and the North Africans has reached to the end.

We hope the technical staff of the Gambia Football Association (GFA) would be able to repeat the tactics used on Sunday game any time we meet a North African opposition as all those teams have the same way of playing.
