Buba Janneh, a young Gambian engineer, presented agricultural equipment, a milling machine and a multipurpose ox-drawn machine he manufactured to President Yahya Jammeh.
The proprietor of Janneh Morri Engineering Manufacturing Company Ltd, Buba Janneh, employs just a handful of Gambians he trains single-handedly at his makeshift work located at his residence in Bakau Newtown, where the presentation ceremony was held. The items were received by Abdoulie Sallah, secretary to cabinet, on behalf of The Gambian leader, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr. Janneh, said his main purpose of setting up this company is to enhance the skills of the youths for the attainment of self-reliance in the production of machines and equipment for the rural and urban population of The Gambia. He added that this entails the development of agricultural machines for production and manufacturing.
Mr Janneh who attended The Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI) from 1986 to 1988, where he got trained as a mechanical engineer, said he is currently hired as an engineering consultant by LB Gaye and Sons Company. The young engineer also complained about the lack of space for a better workshop where many youths can be trained and employed.
He revealed that he established his company two years ago, and that since then, they have been engaged in manufacturing milling machines, oil pressing machines, ox-drawn multipurpose machines and a host of other tools vital to the productive sector of the country.
Mr Jammeh commended The Gambian leader for his outstanding achievements in the agricultural sector as well as for his encouragement of the youths to go back to the land. Receiving the items on behalf of President Janneh, Abdoulie Sallah, secretary to the Cabinet, expressed delight on the brilliant work done by Buba Janneh. He highlighted the great importance President Jammeh attaches to agriculture and its significance in the economy of the country.
The secretary to cabinet delved on the significance of President Janneh’s ‘Back-to- the-land’ initiative, and he used the opportunity to call on Gambian youths to emulate Mr Janneh and go back to the land for the attainment of food self-sufficiency. Mr Sallah further described the donated items as labour saving devices for women and farmers in general.
He encouraged Mr Janneh to keep up the good work and train many, youths especially mechanical engineering students from GTTI, as part of nation building. For his part, Sidi Jarju, permanent secretary at the department of state for Agriculture, said mechanising agriculture is an essential component of agricultural development in The Gambia. He commended Mr Janneh for this magnificent work and called on the youths to emulate him.
Mr Jarju further described Mr Janneh’s work as a product of education and urged students to work hard in order to contribute their quota to national development. He described Professor Jammeh as an enthusiastic visionary leader whose aim is to develop and change The Gambia into a modernised country.
Mawdo Hamadi Sowe, head of Mechanical Section at GTTI, recalled that Buba Janneh had been one of his best students at GTTI in the 1980s. He described his work as excellent, saying it was not a surprise to him. Mr Sowe expressed delight at Mr Janneh’s great efforts and encouraged him to keep up the momentum.
